The Divide Between Survivalists.

The divide between those who talk the talk and those who walk the walk.

I find there are two kinds of self-reliant people these days.  Those who’ve actually lived and worked in those 3rd world (SHTF) environments and those who have not.

However, those who haven’t had practical experience, still do everything they can to try prepare for such an environment.

They just lack that practical experience.

I feel both groups can learn from each other.

Being one who has lived and worked in these 3rd world environments, I can say there is absolutely no substitute for real world, hands on experience.  Some things just cannot be taught in the classroom.

I think the divide amongst the two groups is this.

The actual experienced group realizes that your Mindset, Ingenuity and Resourcefulness are what really matters when you’re faced with SHTF challenges in life. Their way is a philosophy of “adapt to” and “flow” with the new culture and environment.

Those who’ve not been challenged in those real world SHTF environments rely on Guns, Gear and Talking Points from their favorite Prepper/Survivalist bolg or youtube channel.  Their way is to bunker-in.  To “isolate themselves” and “fight against” the change in culture and new environment.

Groups that don’t allow new ideas into their organization and push back against the social structure they live in always seems to have a negative outcome.  When your 1st World environment changes to a 3rd World one, fighting against it may not help your survivability factor.

Answer this question.

If you were going to be dropped into an alien (3rd world) environment, who would you want with you?

Someone who has a theory about how to survive in that environment but has never been in that environment or someone who has lived in that environment before?

I conclude my book “The SHTF Art of War” with the following;

In a disaster of any kind, our ego is our enemy.  Be honest about your limitations and don’t take unnecessary chances.  I believe there are things we can change and things we cannot.  Situations we can prepare for and situations we can’t expect.  There are just some situations we can’t possibly foresee.

Your greatest survival weapons will be your adaptability and how fast you can react.

Do the best you can to be reactive to the environment and flow with the situations you encounter.  You can start training your mind now by replacing the words “How can I” whenever you want to say “I can’t”.

Ass Clown or Legitimate Threat?

Like it or not, there are criminally minded prepper/survivalists and groups out there. Just like the latest NatGeo featured “Doomsday Prepper” Tyler Smith.

Smith, 29, is the leader of Spartan Survival. The group has more than 80 dues-paying members. Smith founded the organization in 2005 to train and prepare others on survivalism.

Tyler states;

“We’re not in it to stockpile. We’re in it to take what you have and there’s nothing you can do to stop us,” Tyler Smith says. “We are your worst nightmare, and we are coming.”

It’s a mistake to disregard them as overweight, crazy survivalists that pose little threat.

Make no mistake about it. Misguided as they are, these groups are organized and criminally minded.

By design, they will be operational almost immediately.  Based on historical fact, the criminal element will be on scene way before any FEMA outreach program can be of assistance to the desperate, hapless, woefully unprepared populace.  The bigger the disaster the faster these looters/marauders will be on scene and the more embolden they will be.

While they may not be a crack SEAL Team 6 commando unit, they are still armed and very dangerous.  They will use historically proven ambush tactics of surprise and violence to catch the unprepared off guard.  They won’t go toe to toe with a stronger group.

Disregard these marauder types all you want.  But history shows that “TAKING” is always easier than actually working for something.

I for one take them seriously.
As silly as they seem to be, they will have a list of priority targets for the area they live in.

If you have a group like this in your area, I’d suggest putting them on your “Naughty List” and be prepared to deal with them accordingly.

I’ve come across scores of people who are hoping and praying for an apocalyptic event that brings society into the Middle Ages again.  While researching for my book “The SHTF Art of WarI’ve spoken with young men in their early twenties who feel society has not dealt them their fair share of the pie and are very angry.

Their only preps are weapons and ammo and a plan to take others stuff to survive.

These young men are attracted to violence and power.  They are ripe to become true believers in a leader that gives them permission to take what they want.  This greatly concerns me, because if that charismatic person leans towards the evil side of the spectrum and they provide security and food for their followers, a whole lot of innocent people are going to suffer.

If this seems farfetched to some people, I would ask them to consult some history.  You would have to look no further back than February 25th of 2013 to see the charismatic, Nation of Islam Minister, Louis Farrakahn, giving a controversial speech to roughly 10,000 people.  During Farrakhan’s speech, he called upon the Chicago cities gang-bangers to serve a better purpose by training to become soldiers who protect his group’s assets.  He stated that since gang members are “natural soldiers,” they could be instructed in “the science of war” and taught to protect the Nation of Islam’s property and assets.

I suggest you check out my earlier post about gangs having an SHTF plan.  You can click HERE to educate yourself some more.

What choice did I have?

You can wish and pray for peace all you want.  But when the SHTF, it is always every man for themselves. The most common phrase spoken by those who commit acts of violence to survive will be…

“what choice did I have.”

The Philippines suffered their worst case scenario in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. More than 600,000 people were displaced by this storm with no food water or medicine.

No food, water, power and limited shelter amongst the stench of rotting dead bodies in the ruins of their cities.  The death toll reached over 6,000.

Lessons in human nature (good & bad) can be learned by studying this disasters rescue and recovery efforts as survivors scour the streets for food and mobs attack aid trucks.

More on this disaster can be found at the

If you’d like to learn more about how the criminal element (and regular people trying to survive) will take advantage of a grid down environment and make a bad situation worse,  you can read “The SHTF Art of War.”

The first rule of avoiding death or serious bodily injury.

The first rule of avoiding death or serious bodily injury.

Don’t do stupid things with stupid people in stupid places.

We are 25 days out from the Black Friday shopping frenzy.  It’s also a historical fact that deranged individuals with a death wish, like to go on a killing spree in gun free zones where large groups of unarmed people gather.

The recent trend is for active shooters to target malls and other shopping centers.

So now that you know that fact, remember the first rule to avoid death or serious bodily injury.

Be smart.  Shop early.

Take a day off and stay away from the fist fights at the mall over an ipad or some other “thing-ah-majig” you do not need.

Stay home, make yourself your favorite beverage and read the “The SHTF Art of War.
