The Default State

I received a text from a friend of mine yesterday that illustrates how unprepared 99.9% of us are.

hysterical1

My friend, lets call her “Roxy” texted me the following:

“Oh my God. I’m on the freeway and pretty much stuck in traffic.  Barely moving at all. It’s 3:30pm so it’s kinda weird for this much traffic.”
“I just had 4 or 5 military convoys go passed…this could be the end.  This is how it all starts in the zombie apocalypse movies.”
“my bug-out bag is in the garage.  I’ve been meaning to put it back in my car and now my gas light is on.”
“it could be that people are just getting off work early on a Friday, or it could be a deadly virus………I just don’t know.”

My friend then related how she was using her smart phone, trying to look up any headlines in the news to find out what was going on.

This is exactly the unprepared state most of us are in at all times.

You could call it our default state.  Humans don’t change unless we are forced to do so.

It’s gotta be painful in order for us to change our ways.

Here is the list I gave to my friend to have in her “go-bag” that stays in her car.

* 2 Large water bottles. (with water)

* Extra Jacket/windbreaker.

* Good Shoes to walk in.

* Ball cap (for the sun)

* Light stocking cap (even in the summer)

* Leather work gloves.

* Safety Glasses in a case.

* N-95 dust mask.

* A Map of your area. (have friends and family “safe-houses” located on the map)

* Small compass.

* Swiss Army Knife or multi-tool

* Aluminum Baseball bat or hiking stick.

(local laws may not permit you to carry a firearm and not everyone has a carry permit and not everyone is comfortable with a firearm)

* Candy/energy bars.

* Toilet Paper roll (in a zip-lock bag)

* 2 Bic lighter.

* Very small 1st Aid kit.

Now I know you can add to and modify this list.

However, I caution you in doing so.

Weight is a factor here and for your normal person, they don’t hike with a back-pack on a regular basis.  The water alone is most of the weight.

Keep in mind this is just a back-pack to get you home or to a location of safety.

Keep it small.

Also, plan for your cell phone to not work. But there are apps to get alerts for traffic problems in your area.

Knowing is half the battle.

Most importantly, you should put a copy of my book “The SHTF Art of War” inside your go-bag.  It is designed to be read in less than 45 minutes.

It’s a slap-in-the-face reality check and has a chapter called “SHTF Traffic Sucks” that covers exactly what you need to know if you’re stuck in a 100 mile traffic jam.

The unknown causes fear and panic.  Fear and panic will cause you to make bad decisions.  Bad decisions may get you hurt or killed.

A go-bag in your vehicle will give you peace of mind knowing you at least have the ability to walk out of a disaster area.

“Do or do not. There is no try.”

Best Advice.

slice

The best advice I can give.

Stop giving a shit about getting likes on social media!

I know this may sound counter productive to selling my book.

However, I’m under no illusion of how few books I would sell on my literary journey.

(according to all my hate mail, and the book being banned by a 7,000 member Facebook survival group, I know it’s most defiantly not a book for everyone. Especially if you have no sense of humor)

WHAT MOBILE COVER FEBRUARY 20058 DECEMBER 2004© TINA KORHONENMODEL: LORI

“I assure you that this book will not be on the New York Times best seller list.”

It was never intended to be.

It was designed to be a slap-in-the-face reality check that could be read in less than 45 minutes when you find yourself in a SHTF situation.

Get away from the internet and get busy.

“Here’s the 5 best pieces of advice I can give someone.”

1. My best advice is to put your time and energy into having some cash on hand when the current credit mechanism of buying goods and services shuts down, banks temporarily shut their doors and ATM’s are empty.

A new monetary system will be put in place by the powers that be.  What that will be is anybodies guess.  You just need to get through that period of time where the current system is not operating.

2. My best advice is to have a short and long term food plan.  I recommend you buy a couple extra items of what you already use in your house when you go to the grocery store.  Invest, yes invest in putting up some meals in a jar.

Garden.

Even if it’s just a tomato plant or radishes.  The time to learn how to do this is not after a disaster.

3. Get together with a Disaster Buddy or two and work up a mutual assistance plan to help each other out in a disaster or emergency.  Grow this into a small mutual assistance group.  Establish a communication system with your Disaster Buddy/Group.

4. Have a way to store or acquire and purify water.

Check out Berkey Water Filters

Or make one yourself using this new filter system.

5. Have a means to defend yourself.  Firearms are an insanely and hotly debated topic in the prepper/survival community.

I always say to get the best gun you can afford for the environment you are in.

Ok!  I know that sounds like I’m side stepping the “best gun” advice for you gun nuts, so I’ll tell you what I would prefer if I could only have one gun.

save

It would be a Savage Model 24.  That’s a single shot, rifle shotgun combo.  I’d want a .22 caliber rifle barrel with a 20 gauge shotgun barrel.

That would suit my needs for my lifestyle and environment.  You may have different needs and live in a more hostile environment and require a different tool.

The last thing I’ll advise is for you to immediately get my book.

Even with advanced warning of an impending winter storm or hurricane, the News routinely shows people running, last minute to the store for basic supplies. Humans for the most part, are unprepared, reactionary creatures and store shelves don’t hold enough supplies for everyone.

When people suddenly need life saving knowledge on survival, and warfare, they’re going to be desperately scrambling for that information.

lost

This book covers those controversial, real world subjects you never think about unless you live in a war zone or an underdeveloped country. It pushes your mind into an uncomfortable way of thinking.

It’s stripped down to quickly deliver the reader information on topics such as how the criminal element will conduct their reign of terror. It covers how to pick a winning survival team, how to prepare for a stay at a FEMA camp, what to expect in a 100 mile traffic jam and what it takes to be a post apocalyptic scavenger. It also provides a list of post collapse professions that ensure you’re essential to a grid down community. Plus a whole lot more.

Cardboard Signs on Sticks

img_9328

Every protest seems to be the same.

There’s no collective.

You have other protesters with their own agenda riding the coat tails of another protest with a different agenda.

It becomes a melting pot of non-sense.

It’s confusing and people have very short attention spans.

Every protest now is viewed by the your average working class citizen (who have bills to pay), as a bunch slackers wanting something for nothing.

redburn

Angry protesters

The message is lost in the white noise made by discontented cry babies.

Adding insult to injury, you have all these anarchist kids causing trouble at “peaceful” protests.

These black clad amateurs have upped their game lately though by blocking intersections, pepper spraying a few people, smashing windows and burning a car or two.

As long as these rookies do not become a collective and unified, they are just piss-ants who are an annoyance.

However, if a charismatic leader, shows up and uses their ability to inspire and motivate followers to perform at high levels, and to be committed to the cause, chaos will ensue.

black

Pepper spray and cardboard signs on sticks, will escalate to time and energy dedicated to destroying specific targets that cause power outages and delays in basic services.

THAT will get peoples attention.

Our unprotected electrical grid and “just-in-time” inventory systems of our grocery stores are painfully easy targets.

Stra-te-gery

I’ve watched this DAPL pipeline protest at Standing Rock North Dakota since the beginning.

It fascinates me from a strategic and logistic level.

Like I say in my book; “when people suddenly need life saving knowledge on survival, and warfare, they’re going to be desperately scrambling for that information.

And here we can watch in real time and learn what happens when you are unprepared for the elements and don’t even have a basic understanding of warfare.

Sand Creek Massacre

Many lessons can be learned here.

waterp

As it sits at this writing, there are approximately 5,000 to 8,000 people in the “water protectors” camp.  This number swells on the weekends when people who are employed return to the camp from their jobs.

I’m fascinated by this occupation from a logistic perspective. Do they have a centralized or decentralized organization?

It appears a hierarchical system needs to be put in place and immigration control might be needed to keep the white hippies out.  Who’s taking charge and what in-fighting for that control is taking place.

History shows that in every rebellion, the people who start the uprising never end up being in charge.

Quote from protestor Alicia Smith: “people are colonizing the camps. I mean that seriously. Plymouth rock seriously. They are coming in, taking food, clothing and occupying space without any desire to participate in camp maintenance and without respect of tribal protocols.
More about protesters complaining about white hippies can be read on the sayanythingblog.

Social issues do arise with this many people colonizing in one spot.

How are they handling their sanitation issues with their waste?

How do they handle the illegal drug use, assaults, rape, theft and fire?

Do they have an end game or is this just the new “stick-it-to-the-man” band wagon to jump onto?

How are they being supplied and are those supply lines being protected?

If I’m asking those question, I’m sure some fella’s much smarter than me from the Law Enforcement side of the situation already have those answers.

wounded

Here’s a history lesson.

Wounded Knee 1973 (The Pine Ridge Seige)
In 1973, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, some 200 Sioux Native Americans, led by members of the American Indian Movement (AIM), occupied Wounded Knee, the site of the infamous 1890 massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. Seventh Cavalry.

They held the site for 71 days, trading gunfire nightly with the United States Marshals Service, FBI agents, and other law enforcement agencies that had cordoned off the area.

They weren’t just protesting civil rights violations.
They were bringing attention to losing their land, their language and forced to abandon their spirituality and adopt the christian religion under terroristic means.

Today it seems like there’s an endless parade of people, groups, races and genders who are claiming grievances of every kind. Identifying oneself and or their ancestors as a “victim” who’s owed something appears to be the new trend in feeling special.

I do think there are some legitimate, terrible transgression against people because of their race color and sex. That is not in dispute and I’m not in denial about that. With that being said, I think the Native American People have a pretty rock solid complaint that trumps all the others.

Why do I bring this up? I bring it up because I wonder if any protest movement will ever have the “balls” that the AIM did in 1973.
Anyone can see that there’s a low hum of discontent vibrating in this country and history proves time and time again that Violence Solves Problems.

This concerns me because during times of civil unrest and war, civilians suffer the most.

“Violence, naked force, has settled more disputes in history than has any other factor and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.”

The DNC’s S.H.T.F. Mistake.

The Democratic National Committee just created a monster.

A monster we should all be concerned about.

dem3

The Bernie Sanders supporters, the Berniacs, just ran smack-dab into reality.

They are now feeling the real burn from wikileaks exposing that the DNC rigged the primary against them.

They will not forget this deep betrayal and just go away.  This movement will hurt (maybe cost) the DNC in this election and defiantly come back to haunt them in the next election.

The best thing you can do to inspire a young person full of piss & vinegar to enact revenge upon you, is to lie to them and cheat them and tell them they don’t matter. Good job DNC!

Good news! According to a new study, holding a grudge burns more calories than not holding one.

Many Democrats scoff at the young naive Bernie supporters and say…

“Welcome to the big leagues.”

“Grow -up!”

“If you don’t like it, why don’t you do something productive about the election process instead of whining and rabble rousing.”

I believe it’s a huge mistake to discount the “Bern-E-Acts”.

We should be careful what we wish for. Those tech savvy “kids” will have 4, maybe 8 years to marinate their anger, grow up, contemplate and organize.

They won’t be the same next time you see them.

They just had their knickers pulled down and got buggered by the DNC in the shower room on their first day in the big leagues.  All while the world watched and dismissed them as a side show.

That surprised look on their faces is already turning to anger.

hill3

These young political revolutionaries have just been taught by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic party that you have to cheat to win.  They have taught these young, impressionable youths that corruption and crime really does pay.  And it pays off BIG.

Those socialistic millennials wont make the same mistake twice. Which should be more concerning to freedom loving capitalists than a Trump presidency.

aow4.jpg

They won’t enter the big league shower room again unarmed and alone.  They wont be without protection.

I do agree, their generation is filled with a plethora of hipster slackers wanting everything for free.  However, I’m more inclined to not dismiss them.  I (begrudgingly) give them a little more credit.

Now that they know that their political leaders cannot be trusted, politicians fight dirty and the game’s rigged against them from every direction, I feel that they’ll react like histories disenfranchised children have always reacted. We’ve given them no other choice.

You Ain’t Moving in With Me!

refuge
Here’s a refugee intake worksheet so you know who’s who and who’s got what, when those people you say “You’re Not letting In” arrive at your bug-out location.
Like it or not, you’re going to have people who show up at your door during a SHTF disaster.
You’ll have friends, family and acquaintances showing up in your drive way looking for a handout.
Shutting the lights off and pretending your not home won’t work.  They ain’t going nowhere.  You’re stuck with them.
The way you should look at this is like the old saying about life giving you lemons.

lems

No!  No tequila shots for you.
You’ve got lots of work to do.  You need to put a tribe together and fast.  People do much better in groups.
You now have a labor force desperate for help.
Here’s your FREE downloadable refugee in-processing worksheet for when your guests show up at your door.  “PDF Refugee Intake Worksheet”

Here’s some things to keep in mind.

People will arrive with their decision making ability compromised. They will be suffering with mental trauma and stress.
Blood is thicker than water but you need to stress community before family.

Inventory

What are they bringing with them?
-Illnesses and special needs.
The number one issue will be feeding everyone.
Confiscate all their supplies. You’re a tribe now.
The number two issue will be keeping your food.
Inventory guns and ammunition.
Who can do what?
What talents are they bringing?
Immediately establish a Work Detail.  Assign jobs to people. Preferably jobs that suit their talents.  You’ll need security, medical, sanitation, communication, food prep, and day care.  The list goes on.
You’ll have to tailor your tribe to your specific needs and vision.  But don’t forget to have a second in command man or woman and some captains.
keys
You can’t do it all yourself.  You’ll burn out fast and lose control of your tribe.  Make sure you delegate.

The Legend of Ol’ Butch.

OB1

On my 49th birthday, I purchased Ol’ Butch from my long time, adventurous, globe trotting, scoundrel pal Thomas Moore. He was about to leave the U.S. for parts unknown and not returning.
I was both surprised that he wanted to let Ol’ Butch go and happy that he thought of me first.  I’d been after him to auction off Ol’ Butch for about 7 years.
Here’s the story of this legendary, well travelled blade in Thomas Moore’s own words.

OB5

Ol’ Butch

By Thomas D. Moore
(aka Tomahawk, Pathfinder Tom, Whiskey Jack)
I was sitting around yesterday afternoon, sippin’ a Whiskey and soda, with my Green river knife “Ol’ Butch” hanging around my neck. the sun was warm on my chest, I began to notice a slight tainted fat smell…..I soon discovered the source of the Ambiance as the handle on my Green river Knife.
Unsheathing the blade, I took a long sniff of the handle, and was flooded with memories of past expeditions, wilderness adventures, countries, people, war zones, horses and mules, skinned deer, elk and moose – the list goes on.

Butch 01

This knife has been with me for 23 years. I bought it in a junk shop in Moab, Utah back in 1989 for the ridiculous price of $6.00. Later on I made a sheath for it from some raw hide salvaged from a dead horse I discovered while on a trip in the Utah desert. The handle has always been used as the socket for hundreds of my bow and drill, friction fires.
My knife has been to 87 countries, 6 war zones and 5 continents.
Ol’ Butch is a comforting friend and a constant companion.

Butch

I have to kinda chuckle at the knife kooks I read about online that ask silly questions like;
“How do I force a patina on my new Mora?”
– First of all – throw away the Mora, get a Green River and USE IT. Get off of your computers, get out into the woods, deserts, jungles and mountains. Split some wood, cut some meat (and a finger or two), build some fires, defend yourself, and simply USE the Knife!
Tomahawk – Scouts out!

pathfinder5

So that’s the story of Ol’Butch.
The lesson here is to go buy or make yourself a blade and get out and use the dern thing.
Brought to you by “The SHTF Art of War“.
It pays to be the smartest guy in the room (with a knife).
